ARE YOU A MENTERN
Most Boomers will have difficulty finding employment if they have lost their job or are looking to make a career change, or maybe just thinking of coming out of retirement.
You are considered a Mentern If you are a seasoned business professional over 50 years of age and interested in sharing your lifetime of experiences and knowledge with younger employees in a workplace environment, yet also willing to learn new skills. Menterns are the fastest-growing segment of the workforce those beyond the age of fifty years old that are no longer content to simply cope with being labelled.
"OVER THE HILL" "OUT TO PASTURE" "TWILIGHT YEARS" "RETIRED"
These Quotations reflect a stubborn myth that aging is a negative experience, and that "successful aging" amounts to nothing more than slowing the inevitable decline of body and mind. (Quotations were taken from the book THE MATURE MIND - THE POSITIVE POWER OF THE AGING BRAIN by Gene D. Cohen M.D. PhD.)
HERE'S WHY THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY SHOULD CONSIDER HIRING A MENTERN
*They have extensive work experience *They know what they want
*They can work with different personality types *They are confident
*They are well connected *They can mentor younger employees.
MENTERNS OFFER BUSINESSES A UNIQUE COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE
Reverse Mentoring.
Reverse Mentoring is an innovative way to encourage learning and facilitate cross-generational relationships. It involves the pairing of a Mentern with a mentee who acts as the mentor to share their expertise with the Mentern. The pairing is knowledge sharing, with the mentee focused on learning from the mentor's vast experience and generational perspective. In addition, there is an emphasis on the leadership development of the mentee.
Reverse mentoring is situated in the mentoring literature as an alternative form of mentoring, with unique characteristics and support functions exchanged that distinguish it from other developmental relationships. The Mentern model is developed to focus on key variables and consider how reverse mentoring may benefit individuals and organizations.
Menterns see the world differently. They weren't raised on social media and the internet. This different perspective can be valuable in a professional situation, particularly if an office is heavy on millennials.
An even balance is key with Menterns who will become Interns learning new skills from Millennials in a workplace environment. A perfect example of this concept was brilliantly demonstrated in the movie starring Robert D'Niro called the Intern.
In the movie a retired 70-year-old widower, Ben (played by Robert De Niro), is bored with retired life. He applies to be a senior intern at an online fashion retailer and gets the position. The founder of the company is a tireless Millennial, ho is a driven, demanding, dynamic workaholic. Ben is made her intern, but this is a nominal role - she doesn't intend to give him work, and it is just window dressing. However, Ben proves to be quite useful and, more than that, a source of support and wisdom. Eventually Ben is offered the position of CEO.
Quote from the Book : THE POWER OF OLDERMINDS : James Trefil, physicist and author.
Your brain never stops developing and changing. It's been doing it from the time you were an embryo and will keep on doing it all your life .And this ability perhaps represents its greatest strength.
ARE YOU READY TO RETIRE ?
Staying in the workplace doesn't necessarily mean working full time. Part-time employment can give Menterns the engagement, flexibility and extra income they seek. For employers this can help keep their payroll costs down.
Some Menterns may look forward to retirement but still have difficulty opting out of their occupation altogether. They can however continue contributing as a consultant, freelance adviser or contract-based professional. For those with years of experience, expertise and success, consulting lets them act as independent subject-matter experts for a range of companies or organizations in their chosen industry or discipline. Freelance and project-based work also offers autonomy and the flexibility to take on assignments according to availability or interest level while leveraging experience and expertise at the same time.
The Social Strategy Group is in the process of establishing relationships with Employment agencies, Head hunting organizations and Government employment services to leverage the expertise of our Mentern database to Start-Up Businesses, or Businesses that cannot afford to hire full time Marketing Services.
